Types of Hardware

Floppy drives These are certainly in the "optional" category these days. As discussed above, most data are either stored on hard drives, CD/DVD-ROMS, or other removable media. However, for completeness, a floppy drive can be used to temporarily store data, such as workk. As they're so small in data storage, they're almost obselete. However, you can buy external floppy drives, like you can with external hard drives, so if your PC doesn't come with a floppy drive, this doesn't mean that you have to give away your old floppies.

Graphics cards and Monitors Graphics cards send information to monitors, which is a device that acts like a TV screen. This is, for a blind person, an optional component as although screen readers require a graphics card installed for it to be properly functional, they do not need monitors. However, the monitor is the output device that displays the images you see on the screen as well as any text that appears, such as text you enter in a word processor. That's all there is to a monitor.

That's why it's safe to turn off or even unplug a monitor as screen readers are not affected, and nor is the PC in general. Braille displays For a blind person, there are specialist hardware that allows you to feel what's on the screen using Braille. It's called Braille displays, and they work by electronic styles that make up the dots. Screen readers uses Braille drivers, as well as the software for the Braille display (if required), to interact with it.

They can come as either portable notetakers that can be used as a refreshable Braille display, or simply a device that fits underneath your keyboard and can only be used as a refreshable Braille display. If you read your screen reader's documentation, it will describe their supported Braille displays, as well as how to install them, and provides the keystrokes, which are used on the display itself, to interact with both Windows and the screen reader. Window-Eyes, for example, supports over 40 Braille displays.
